Monitor Audio upgrades lifestyle Radius line

August 10, 2013 Written by Editor

MONITOR Audio has revamped and expanded its award-winning Radius lifestyle speaker system, launched a decade ago and updated in 2008. The next-generation line, which comprises eight models, comes with all-metal drivers incorporating Monitor Audio’s C-CAM technology.

The existing models benefiting from this exercise are Radius 45, 90 and 270, while there are now slimmed-down versions of the 225 centre unit and Radius One soundbar, along with a new centre-channel unit, the 200, plus two compact active sub-woofers – the 380 and 390.

The new metal drivers are a spin-off from the flagship Platinum range. The signature C-CAM bass cones have a continuous rigid surface, coupled to a longer voice coil and larger motor, offering greater drive force, longer excursions and lower distortion to produce more extended and accurate bass definition. The new 25mm tweeter promises a smoother, more natural response from the system.

The 380 sub has twin 8-inch drivers (including an auxiliary bass radiator) powered by a 200W Class D amplifier, while the 390 uses twin 10-inch drivers (also with ABR) powered by a 220W Class D amp. Both amplifiers are DSP controlled and the radiators on the units are tuned low to produce deep, taut, size-defying bass.

The Radius system is available in gloss black, gloss white and walnut finishes.

Prices are – Radius45 cube, £200 a pair; Radius90 two-way monitor, £350 a pair; Radius200 centre-channel speaker, £200 per unit; Radius225  LCR, £275 each; Radius270 floorstander, £700  a pair; RadiusONE  soundbar, £500 each; Radius 380  subwoofer, £500 each; Radius 390 subwoofer, £600 each

The new Radius models begin shipping in September.
