Ready-to-play MT2 is McIntosh’s new turntable

March 10, 2018 1 Comment Written by The Editor

YOU’RE a McIntosh lover and your hi-fi system comprises mostly equipment from the iconic American company, down to a digital source. But you feel the urge to explore vinyl territory; it has to be a hassle-free, not-too-costly entry, unlike the other turntables McIntosh already offers. Enter the MT2, which comes mounted with a high-output MC cartridge that makes it possible to plug the turntable into an MM input.

The full-feature MT2 Precision Turntable, according to the company, “combines the latest in turntable technology and design to deliver both superb performance and accurate playback. A full complement of features allows for all recordings to be reproduced with flawless realism. Its advanced electronic and mechanical design will give you many years of smooth, trouble-free operation.”

To add a subtly dramatic effect, a soft green glow emanates from under the platter and the outside edges of the plinth for “a touch of refined ambiance”.

Both 33-1/3 and 45rpm speeds can be set and the turntable is ready to go from the box – tracking force, anti-skate force, cartridge overhang and arm height are all factory preset for optimum performance. McIntosh promises that “the remaining set-up steps are simple and you’ll be enjoying your vinyl in no time.”

The MC cartridge has an alloy cantilever and an elliptical diamond stylus, while the tonearm is constructed from “dural-aluminium with special damping materials and is lightweight yet highly rigid.” The vertical bearings feature two precision ceramic surfaces with damping fluid; the horizontal bearing is a gimballed sapphire design.

The belt-driven outer platter is made from “a special dynamically balanced polyoxymethylene and is over one-inch thick”, the heft enabling noise-free handling of external vibration.

“The inner platter is made of CNC-precision milled aluminium. The platters rotate on a polished and tempered steel shaft in a sintered bronze bushing. The DC motor is driven by an external voltage-stabilised power supply and is completely decoupled from the chassis, isolating your records from any mechanical interference. Its sturdy plinth has a resonance optimised and highly compressed wood base with black lacquer finish, while the top and middle acrylic plates help absorb unwanted vibrations.”

For protection from dust, a clear cover is included in the deal. Tempted? The MT2 is shipping now, so harass your dealer to let you experience one.
